Which amateur finished one stroke behind Jack Burke Jr. at the 1956 Masters?
Answer
Ken Venturi
Answer
Ken Venturi
The amateur who finished one stroke behind Jack Burke Jr. at the 1956 Masters was Ken Venturi.
Venturi led the tournament for much of the week and opened with a then-record Masters round of 66 by an amateur. He carried a four-shot lead into the final round, but Burke rallied to shoot 71 while Venturi struggled on the back nine and finished with an 80.
Burke’s final score was 289, or one over par, while Venturi finished at 290, two over par. The one-stroke margin gave Burke his first Masters title and his first major championship. Venturi nevertheless won the Silver Cup as the low amateur.
The 1956 event is also notable because it was the final Masters without a 36-hole cut. Beginning in 1957, the tournament introduced a cut to reduce the weekend field. Venturi later won the 1964 U.S. Open as a professional, but his 1956 Masters performance remains one of the event’s most famous amateur near-misses.
