Who designed the M-shaped McDonald’s logo introduced in 1962?

The story behind the answer

Jim Schindler designed the M-shaped McDonald’s logo introduced in 1962.

Schindler was an engineering and design consultant associated with McDonald’s. He combined the restaurant chain’s two architectural arches into a single stylized M. The result was more than a drawing of a building: it was a compact brand mark that could identify restaurants, signs, packaging, uniforms, and advertisements.

The logo grew from the physical design of McDonald’s restaurants in the 1950s. Those buildings used separate golden arches on opposite sides of the roofline. Schindler’s version connected the visual idea to the first letter of the company name, helping make the symbol useful across many formats.

The Golden Arches name refers both to the original architectural forms and to the logo derived from them. Stanley Meston is therefore associated with the building arches, while Jim Schindler is associated with the 1962 logo design.
