Who designed the Lamborghini Murciélago?

The story behind the answer

The Lamborghini Murciélago was designed by Luc Donckerwolke. He was Lamborghini’s head of design from 1998 to 2005 and led the styling of the company’s new V12 flagship, which replaced the Diablo.

The Murciélago debuted in 2001 and was Lamborghini’s first completely new production design under Audi ownership. Its sharply creased body, low nose, scissor doors and wide rear haunches gave the car a more modern appearance than the outgoing Diablo while retaining Lamborghini’s dramatic visual identity.

A common mix-up involves Walter de Silva and Filippo Perini. De Silva was Lamborghini’s design chief before Donckerwolke and later worked on the Miura concept, while Perini was responsible for later Lamborghini design work, including the Murciélago facelift. The original Murciélago design, however, is credited to Donckerwolke.

The model remained in production from 2001 to 2010, with 4,099 cars built. Its successor, the Aventador, was unveiled in 2011.
