Who designed McDonald’s 1962 Golden Arches logo as a stylized letter M?

The story behind the answer

Jim Schindler designed McDonald’s 1962 Golden Arches logo as a stylized letter M.

The logo developed from the physical arches used in McDonald’s restaurant architecture. Those large yellow structures had originally been conceived as eye-catching roadside features, helping motorists identify a restaurant from a distance. Schindler combined the two arches into a single emblem that also read as the initial letter of McDonald’s.

This change was important because it transformed an architectural feature into a portable corporate symbol. The arches could appear on signs, packaging, advertising and other branded materials without requiring a picture of an entire restaurant.

The arches are sometimes credited generally to Ray Kroc, because Kroc led McDonald’s expansion, or to architect Stanley Clark Meston, who designed the original building concept. Meston was central to the restaurant architecture, but Jim Schindler is credited with the 1962 logo design.
