Chares of Lindos designed and built the ancient Colossus of Rhodes, according to ancient accounts.

Chares was a sculptor from Lindos, one of the major cities on the island of Rhodes. The Colossus represented the sun god Helios and celebrated Rhodes after the city resisted a siege by Demetrius I of Macedon.

The bronze figure was made from large sections assembled around an iron and stone framework. Ancient writers describe a construction period of about twelve years, although details of its exact appearance and engineering remain debated.

The Colossus stood for only a few decades before an earthquake toppled it in the 3rd century BC. Contrary to a popular modern image, ancient evidence does not support the figure straddling the harbor entrance.
