Who defeated Justin Rose in a playoff to win the 2025 Masters?

The story behind the answer

Rory McIlroy defeated Justin Rose in a playoff to win the 2025 Masters. He made birdie on the first sudden-death playoff hole at Augusta National, earning his first green jacket and completing the career Grand Slam.

McIlroy and Rose both finished the 72-hole tournament at 11-under-par 277. McIlroy had led after 54 holes, but a closing bogey on the 18th dropped him into the playoff after Rose’s excellent final-round 66 tied the score. On the extra hole, both players found the fairway, but McIlroy hit his wedge to about four feet.

Rose missed his par attempt, and McIlroy converted the winning birdie putt. The result made him the sixth player to complete the modern career Grand Slam, joining the group of golfers who have won the Masters, U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship.

This was not a playoff involving Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm or Scottie Scheffler. DeChambeau finished tied for fifth, while Scheffler finished fourth; Rose was McIlroy’s sole playoff opponent.
