Shawn Michaels defeated Bret Hart in the main event of WrestleMania XII’s Iron Man match.
The match took place on March 31, 1996, at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California. It was contested under a 60-minute Iron Man format, in which the wrestler with the most falls at the end of regulation wins.
Neither wrestler scored during the first hour, so the match went to sudden-death overtime. Michaels won with a superkick, known as Sweet Chin Music, becoming WWF Champion for the first time.
The result was a major moment in Michaels’ career and one of the defining matches of the New Generation era. Bret Hart had entered as champion after defeating Diesel at Survivor Series 1995. The match is often confused with their later 1997 rivalry, which culminated in the Montreal Screwjob.
