Who defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the 2025 Australian Open women's singles final?

The story behind the answer

Madison Keys defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the 2025 Australian Open women's singles final.

Keys won the championship match 6–3, 2–6, 7–5, overcoming the two-time defending champion in a tense three-set contest. The victory gave Keys her first major singles title after years of deep Grand Slam runs and made her the lowest-ranked Australian Open women's champion since Serena Williams in 2007.

The final capped a remarkable tournament for Keys. She saved a match point against Iga Świątek in the semifinals and defeated four top-10 seeds on her way to the trophy, a rare achievement in the Open Era. Sabalenka, meanwhile, was trying to become the first woman since Martina Hingis in 1999 to win three straight Australian Open singles titles.

The result is sometimes confused with the 2024 final, when Sabalenka successfully defended her title against Zheng Qinwen. Keys was the 2025 champion, while Sabalenka finished runner-up.
