Who decapitates Hershel Greene?

The Governor decapitates Hershel Greene during the prison assault in “Too Far Gone.” The Governor uses Michonne’s katana to strike Hershel after Rick refuses his demand that the prison community surrender.

Hershel is captured alongside Michonne and brought to the prison as leverage. Rick tries to persuade the Governor’s militia that both groups can coexist, echoing Hershel’s belief that people are not beyond saving. The Governor rejects the appeal, calls Rick a liar, and swings the sword into Hershel’s neck.

The first blow only partially decapitates Hershel. As Hershel attempts to crawl away, the Governor catches him and repeatedly strikes him until the execution is complete. The moment ends Hershel’s role as the group’s moral center and becomes one of the show’s defining betrayals. Merle, Shane, and Negan are associated with other major deaths, but none of them kills Hershel.
