Who created the television series The Mandalorian?

Jon Favreau created the television series The Mandalorian. He developed the show for Disney+ and served as its showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer during its early seasons.

Favreau was already closely associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe before The Mandalorian, having directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2 and played Happy Hogan. For Star Wars, he helped shape a space-Western story centered on a lone bounty hunter rather than a traditional Jedi or Skywalker-family narrative.

The series was produced by Lucasfilm, with Dave Filoni also serving as a major creative force and executive producer. That collaboration sometimes causes confusion, because Filoni directed the first episode and contributed extensively to the wider Star Wars storytelling. Kathleen Kennedy was Lucasfilm’s president, while George Lucas created the original Star Wars franchise, but neither is credited as the creator of this series.

Favreau also wrote the first episode and later directed episodes himself. His creative leadership helped establish the show’s tone, practical effects, and serialized relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu.
