Who created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic-book characters?

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic-book characters.

The pair developed the idea in Northampton, Massachusetts, during the early 1980s. Eastman drew a masked, sword-carrying turtle as a joke, and Laird helped expand the sketch into a team of four crime-fighting mutants.

Their partnership combined Eastman’s energetic drawing style with Laird’s interest in comic-book storytelling and design. They self-published the first issue through their company, Mirage Studios, rather than beginning with a major publisher.

The characters’ names, personalities, weapons, and visual differences made the unusual premise easy to recognize. The franchise later expanded into television, films, toys, video games, and other media, but Eastman and Laird remained the original creators. They are sometimes confused with later writers, artists, or producers who shaped particular adaptations.
