Konami developed the 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
The side-scrolling action game was based primarily on the 1987 animated series and gave players control of the four turtle heroes. Players could switch between Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, each carrying a different weapon and having different reach or attack characteristics. Konami also published the game.
This title is often called TMNT or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rather than being confused with later arcade games. Konami subsequently developed several other Turtles games, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game for the NES. The 1989 release is notable for bringing the franchise to Nintendo’s major home console during the height of the cartoon’s popularity.
