Who created the Fujita scale for rating tornado damage? Ted Fujita created it. Tetsuya Theodore “Ted” Fujita was a Japanese-American meteorologist whose research transformed the study of tornadoes and other severe weather.

Fujita introduced his tornado-intensity scale in 1971. It linked observed damage to estimated wind speeds, giving scientists and officials a consistent way to classify tornadoes from F0 through F5. Because direct measurements inside tornadoes were rare, investigators relied heavily on damage surveys, photographs, and engineering judgment.

Fujita also pioneered aerial tornado surveys and detailed mapping of damage paths. He helped establish that many powerful tornadoes contain multiple suction vortices, and his work on downbursts and microbursts improved aviation safety. His colleagues and the media sometimes called him “Mr. Tornado.”

A common mix-up is confusing Fujita with the later team that developed the Enhanced Fujita scale. The original scale bears Fujita’s name; the revised EF scale was developed by a broader group of meteorologists and engineers and began U.S. operational use in 2007.
