The 1989 Daulatpur-Saturia tornado struck which Bangladesh district?
Answer
Manikganj District
Answer
Manikganj District
The 1989 Daulatpur–Saturia tornado struck Bangladesh’s Manikganj District.
The tornado touched down near Daulatpur on April 26, 1989, then traveled east toward Saturia. Both places are in Manikganj District, in central Bangladesh. Saturia was among the hardest-hit areas, and the storm devastated settlements across several upazilas.
At the time of the tornado, Manikganj had recently become a separate district: its former subdivision was elevated to district status in 1984. That administrative detail can cause confusion, because the area had previously belonged to Dhaka District and, earlier, had been transferred from Faridpur District.
The disaster is often called the Daulatpur–Saturia tornado because those two localities identify the storm’s most severely affected parts of the track. It is sometimes associated broadly with Dhaka Division, but Dhaka Division is the larger administrative division; Manikganj District is the more precise answer. Reported losses included thousands of injuries and roughly 80,000 people made homeless.
