The deadliest tornado on record struck which country on April 26, 1989?
Answer
Bangladesh
Answer
Bangladesh
The deadliest tornado on record struck Bangladesh on April 26, 1989.
The Daulatpur–Saturia tornado formed in central Bangladesh and hit Daulatpur before moving toward Saturia in what is now Manikganj District. Its path extended roughly 80 kilometers across a heavily populated area, destroying homes, uprooting trees and leaving about 80,000 people homeless.
The World Meteorological Organization has cited an estimated death toll of about 1,300, which would make it the deadliest tornado in recorded history. However, later research has questioned that figure and argued that another Bangladesh tornado, the April 14, 1969 Dhaka tornado, may have caused more deaths. That uncertainty affects the ranking, not the country: either way, the 1989 disaster occurred in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is especially vulnerable to severe pre-monsoon thunderstorms. Local storms known as Kalbaishakhi, or nor'westers, commonly develop in March through May when warm, humid air, instability and strong wind shear combine.
