Fëanor created the Elvish writing system known as the Tengwar in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
In Tolkien’s fictional history, Fëanor devised the Tengwar during the First Age. The system was designed primarily for writing Quenya and was later adapted for other languages, including Sindarin and the Black Speech. Its letters are often called tengwar, a Quenya word meaning “letters.”
The script is notable for its elegant shapes and for representing consonants and vowels through a systematic arrangement of signs. Tolkien developed several modes of use, so the same visible signs could represent different sounds depending on the language.
Fëanor is also central to the story of the Silmarils and the rebellion of the Ñoldor. He should not be confused with Celebrimbor, who forged the Rings of Power and belonged to a later generation.
