Who created the Animus in the modern-day story of Assassin's Creed?

Abstergo Industries created the Animus in Assassin's Creed's modern-day story.

Abstergo is a powerful modern corporation secretly controlled by the Templars. Its Animus technology allows a user to access genetic memories inherited from ancestors, reconstructing experiences from the past rather than sending the user physically through time.

In the first game, Desmond Miles is forced to use an Animus by Abstergo scientist Warren Vidic. Abstergo presents the machine as a research device, but the company also uses it to locate Pieces of Eden and pursue the Templars' goals. The Assassin Brotherhood later develops and uses modified versions. The Animus is therefore the device, while Abstergo Industries is the organization that originally develops it in the modern narrative.
