Who created Pandora at Zeus’s command according to Hesiod’s account?

The story behind the answer

According to Hesiod’s account, Hephaestus created Pandora at Zeus’s command.

Hephaestus was the Greek god of fire, metalworking, craft, and smithing. Zeus instructed him to fashion Pandora from earth, giving the myth a deliberate connection with divine workmanship. Other gods then contributed qualities, clothing, ornaments, or skills, which helps explain the name “Pandora,” or “all-gifted.”

The story appears in Hesiod’s Works and Days and is part of Zeus’s punishment after Prometheus gave fire to humans. Pandora is therefore not presented as an ordinary human birth but as a constructed divine creation.

Hephaestus is also famous in Greek mythology for making armor and weapons for gods and heroes, including Achilles’ armor in the Iliad. His role in Pandora’s creation emphasizes the poem’s image of a carefully assembled, alluring gift whose consequences are disastrous.
