Elpis is the Greek personification of hope associated with the final presence in Pandora’s jar.
In Greek mythology, Elpis represents hope or expectation. Hesiod’s account of Pandora describes evils escaping from the jar while Elpis remains within it. The detail is brief but has become central to later interpretations of the myth because it suggests that humanity retains some counterforce to suffering.
Elpis is not simply interchangeable with every Greek goddess associated with good fortune. Nike personifies victory, Iris is linked with the rainbow and divine messages, and Nemesis represents retribution. Elpis has the narrower and more relevant association with hope.
The story’s wording has led scholars to debate whether hope’s remaining inside the jar is a blessing, a deprivation, or an ambiguous ending. Modern popular culture generally treats it as reassurance. In either interpretation, naming Elpis identifies the specific mythological figure rather than giving only the abstract English answer “hope.”
