Who created Chanel No. 5, the Chanel fragrance first released in 1921?
Answer
Ernest Beaux
Answer
Ernest Beaux
Ernest Beaux created Chanel No. 5, the Chanel fragrance first released in 1921.
Beaux was a French-Russian perfumer who presented several samples to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. She selected the fifth sample, helping inspire the perfume’s famous name. Chanel No. 5 became one of the earliest major modern fragrances to use aldehydes prominently, giving its floral formula a distinctive lifted quality.
The perfume was introduced commercially by Chanel in 1921 and later became closely associated with the fashion house’s identity. Its bottle, minimalist label, and connection with Marilyn Monroe helped turn it into a cultural symbol as well as a luxury product.
A common mix-up is crediting Chanel herself as the perfumer. She commissioned and selected the fragrance, but Ernest Beaux composed it. Beaux also created other fragrances, including Chanel No. 22 and Bois des Îles.
