Who composed the musical score for The Terminator?

The story behind the answer

Brad Fiedel composed the musical score for The Terminator. His electronic score helped define the film’s cold, mechanical atmosphere and became one of the franchise’s most recognizable musical elements.

Fiedel created the famous main theme around a forceful, irregular rhythmic pattern that suggests machinery and relentless movement. The soundtrack’s electronic textures suited the film’s low-budget, futuristic vision and contrasted with the more traditional orchestral style common in many action films of the period.

He returned to compose Terminator 2: Judgment Day, expanding the musical language while retaining the central theme. The sequel’s score includes darker dramatic passages and music connected to the relationship between John Connor and the reprogrammed T-800.

Fiedel’s work is sometimes confused with the scores of other major science-fiction composers, including James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith. Goldsmith composed Alien, while Horner scored Aliens; neither composed the original Terminator film.
