Louis Prima composed the jazz standard “Sing, Sing, Sing.”
Prima recorded and released the song in 1936, adding the subtitle “With a Swing.” Benny Goodman later made it famous through his big band, whose extended 1937 Carnegie Hall performance became one of the best-known swing recordings.
Goodman’s version featured prominent drum work by Gene Krupa and helped demonstrate how a rhythm-focused arrangement could sustain a large concert performance. The piece became closely identified with the Swing Era even though Goodman was not its composer.
A common mix-up is crediting the song to Goodman because his orchestra’s recording is so famous. Goodman was the bandleader and clarinetist associated with the best-known version, while Prima wrote the composition. Prima was also a trumpeter, singer, bandleader, and entertainer whose career continued into later popular music.
