Which jazz pianist recorded the 1975 solo album The Köln Concert?

The story behind the answer

Keith Jarrett recorded the 1975 solo album The Köln Concert.

The recording documents Jarrett’s improvised solo piano performance at the Cologne Opera in West Germany on January 24, 1975. The concert was organized under difficult circumstances, including problems with the venue’s available piano, but Jarrett created a complete performance at the keyboard.

ECM Records released the music as a double album later in 1975. Rather than presenting a set of prewritten compositions, the album consists largely of spontaneous improvisation, organized into broad sections and shorter movements.

The Köln Concert became one of the best-selling solo jazz albums and helped introduce improvised jazz piano to a wide audience. Its success also made it a frequent reference point in discussions of live improvisation and crossover appeal.
