The Newport Jazz Festival was first held in 1954.
The festival was founded by jazz impresario George Wein and took place in Newport, Rhode Island. Its inaugural edition ran from July 16 to July 18, 1954, making it one of the earliest major outdoor jazz festivals in the United States. The event presented established stars alongside important younger performers.
Newport became especially significant because it brought jazz to a large festival audience rather than limiting performances to clubs and concert halls. The festival’s later history included landmark appearances by artists such as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis.
A common mix-up is the festival’s relationship to the Newport Folk Festival, which was founded later, in 1959. The jazz festival also moved away from Newport for periods, including years in New York, but its original home and founding date remain central to its identity.
