Who commanded the British Eighth Army at the Second Battle of El Alamein?
Answer
Bernard Montgomery
Answer
Bernard Montgomery
Bernard Montgomery commanded the British Eighth Army at the Second Battle of El Alamein in October and November 1942.
Montgomery took command in August 1942 after Lieutenant-General William Gott, his predecessor, was killed when his aircraft was shot down. He inherited an army defending Egypt against Erwin Rommel's German-Italian forces, whose advance threatened the Suez Canal and wider Allied positions in the Middle East.
Montgomery organized a major offensive that began on 23 October. His plan used infantry attacks, artillery, mine-clearing operations, armour, and deception to wear down the Axis defenses. After nearly two weeks of fighting, the Axis army began retreating westward. The victory helped secure Egypt and became a major turning point in the North African campaign.
Harold Alexander was the senior Allied commander in the Middle East, not the Eighth Army commander. Claude Auchinleck had previously held the army command, while William Slim served in other major wartime commands.
