Who co-designed Atari's Centipede with Ed Logg?
Answer
Dona Bailey
Answer
Dona Bailey
Dona Bailey co-designed Atari's Centipede with Ed Logg.
Centipede was released in arcades in 1981. Ed Logg was an established Atari designer, while Dona Bailey joined the project and contributed to the game's design and development. Their collaboration produced one of Atari's best-known fixed-screen shooters.
The player controls a small cannon at the bottom of the screen and fires upward at a centipede that winds through a field of mushrooms. Fleas, spiders, and scorpions add different movement patterns and threats. Bailey's role is sometimes omitted in short histories, but she is specifically credited as co-designer.
Centipede is also notable as one of the early major arcade games to have a woman among its principal designers. Carol Shaw is a different pioneering game designer, associated especially with River Raid, so she is not the answer here.
