In Sega’s 1986 arcade game Out Run, the player’s red convertible represents a Ferrari Testarossa.
The car is a two-seat convertible styled after the Ferrari Testarossa, an exotic mid-engined sports car introduced by Ferrari in 1984. Out Run places the vehicle on a fast, branching road journey, with the driver accompanied by a blonde passenger and a choice of music tracks.
Sega did not originally use the Ferrari name in the title, but the car’s appearance is unmistakably associated with the Testarossa. Later versions and ports retained the recognizable red sports car while sometimes changing branding or graphical details because of licensing differences.
Out Run’s driving model emphasizes drifting, wide curves, and scenic travel rather than realistic racing simulation. Its cabinet, designed around the car’s steering wheel and seat, helped make the vehicle itself part of the game’s identity. The Testarossa association is consequently central to the game’s visual style, not just a minor design reference.
