In Sega’s 1982 arcade game Zaxxon, what type of perspective shows the action?

The story behind the answer

Sega’s 1982 arcade game Zaxxon presents its action using an isometric perspective.

The viewpoint shows the player’s spacecraft and the maze-like environments from an angled, three-dimensional-looking position. Players must control not only horizontal movement but also altitude, watching a height indicator and shadow to avoid walls, barriers, and other hazards. This made Zaxxon’s movement feel different from the flat side-view or top-down formats common in earlier arcade games.

Zaxxon was developed by Sega and became notable for using an axonometric visual style to create the impression of depth on a two-dimensional screen. The name is associated with the game’s giant robotic boss, which appears during the later part of the first stage. Fuel management is also important: the ship’s fuel decreases during flight and must be replenished by destroying fuel tanks.

The game is sometimes described casually as “3D,” but its display is not true three-dimensional rendering. Isometric perspective is the more precise term for the fixed angled projection used to represent the playfield and objects.
