Ray Kroc bought the McDonald brothers’ franchise rights and drove McDonald’s national expansion.
Kroc was a milkshake-mixer salesman when he encountered the unusually busy McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, California. Impressed by the restaurant’s speed and standardized menu, he became the company’s franchising agent in 1954. He opened a McDonald’s restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1955.
Kroc’s contribution was not inventing the original restaurant system; Richard and Maurice McDonald had already created the highly efficient operation. His major role was turning that local model into a large national franchise network with consistent branding, training, restaurant design, and operating standards.
Kroc eventually gained control of the company from the brothers. This history creates a common mix-up: Kroc did not found the original San Bernardino restaurant, but he became the central figure in building McDonald’s into a national brand.
