Who became the President of South Korea in 1998?

The story behind the answer

Kim Dae-jung became President of South Korea in 1998.

He was elected on December 18, 1997, and took office on February 25, 1998, succeeding Kim Young-sam. His inauguration marked the first peaceful transfer of presidential power from a governing party to an opposition party in South Korean history, an important milestone in the country’s democratic development.

Kim entered office during the Asian financial crisis, when South Korea faced severe economic pressure and accepted a large International Monetary Fund bailout. His administration pursued financial restructuring, corporate reforms, and measures intended to restore investor confidence. He also promoted the “Sunshine Policy,” which sought greater engagement and reconciliation with North Korea.

Kim’s presidency is sometimes confused with the year of his election. He won the election in late 1997, but South Korea’s presidential term began with his inauguration in February 1998. He served until 2003 and received the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts toward democracy and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.
