Dalí met Picasso during his first trip to Paris in 1926, when Dalí was 22 and Picasso was already an internationally celebrated modernist. Dalí admired Picasso deeply, and the encounter exposed him to the leading currents of the Parisian avant-garde, including Cubism and Surrealism.

The two artists came from Spain but belonged to different generations: Picasso was born in 1881, while Dalí was born in 1904. Picasso’s influence can be seen in some of Dalí’s early experiments, although Dalí eventually developed his own meticulously painted, dreamlike Surrealist style.

A common mix-up is Joan Miró, another important Spanish painter whom Dalí also knew and who helped connect him with Parisian Surrealist circles.
