Who became the Florida Panthers' captain for the 2014-15 NHL season?

The story behind the answer

Willie Mitchell became the Florida Panthers’ captain for the 2014–15 NHL season. The veteran defenseman took over the leadership role after joining Florida as an experienced blue-line presence.

Mitchell was a stay-at-home defenseman known for physical play, defensive positioning and leadership rather than high-scoring production. Before arriving in Florida, he played for the New Jersey Devils, Minnesota Wild, Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings. With Los Angeles, he helped win the Stanley Cup in 2012.

The Panthers signed Mitchell in 2014 after his championship years with the Kings. He became the eighth captain in franchise history and wore the “C” during the 2014–15 and 2015–16 seasons. His first season in Florida included 66 games and eight points, numbers that underscored his defensive role.

Mitchell is sometimes confused with later Panthers captains because Florida’s leadership changed after his tenure. He was succeeded by Derek MacKenzie in 2016, while Aleksander Barkov eventually became the franchise’s long-term captain.
