Who became the first U.S. president, a key figure in America250 history?

The story behind the answer

George Washington became the first president of the United States. His 1789 inauguration followed the ratification of the Constitution and established the executive office whose later history forms part of the America250 story.

Washington had commanded the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and later presided over the Constitutional Convention. His election by the Electoral College was unanimous, making him the only president to receive every electoral vote in an election. He traveled from Mount Vernon to New York City to assume office.

Washington’s first administration helped define powers and practices that the Constitution left broadly stated. He appointed the first cabinet officers, supported creation of a national financial system, and set precedents for presidential conduct. He should not be confused with John Adams, who was Washington’s vice president and succeeded him in 1797.
