In what year was the Liberty Bell cast?
Answer
1752
Answer
1752
The Liberty Bell was cast in 1752.
The bell was commissioned for the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall, in Philadelphia. London founders Thomas Lester and the Lester and Pack firm cast it. After the first bell cracked during testing, local metalworkers John Pass and John Stow recast it in Philadelphia in 1753.
The bell’s inscription comes from Leviticus 25:10: “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof.” The wording helped make the bell a powerful symbol of liberty, especially during the nineteenth century and the abolitionist movement.
A popular tradition connects the Liberty Bell with the reading of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, but historians have found no contemporary evidence that it rang that day. Its famous crack developed during its working life, and the bell was retired from active ringing in the nineteenth century.
