Georgia was the last of the Thirteen Colonies to be established, in 1732.
The Province of Georgia was founded under a charter granted by King George II to James Oglethorpe and the trustees of the Georgia colony. The first settlement, Savannah, was established in 1733, so the colony’s founding date and first settlement date are sometimes reported differently. Georgia became a buffer between South Carolina and Spanish Florida.
The traditional list of Thirteen Colonies includes four New England colonies, four Middle Colonies, and five Southern Colonies. Georgia is counted among the Southern Colonies, alongside Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
The phrase “Thirteen Colonies” refers specifically to the British colonies that united during the American Revolution. It does not mean that all British possessions in North America were included. Georgia’s creation completed the familiar group, although the colonies had different founders, economies, laws, and relationships with Indigenous nations.
