Which year named Mahatma Gandhi Time magazine’s “Man of the Year”?

The story behind the answer

Time magazine named Mahatma Gandhi its “Man of the Year” for 1930.

The selection followed Gandhi’s leadership of the Salt March and the wider civil-disobedience campaign against British rule. Beginning in March 1930, Gandhi led followers from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, where he openly broke the colonial salt laws. The action helped make Indian independence a major international news story.

Time’s annual designation was called “Man of the Year” until 1999, when it was renamed “Person of the Year.” Gandhi’s 1930 selection therefore uses the historical title that appeared in the magazine at the time.

This honor is distinct from the Nobel Peace Prize. Gandhi was nominated several times for that prize but never received it. His Time recognition was a magazine designation, not an international governmental or academic award.
