On which date did India become independent while Mahatma Gandhi stayed in Calcutta?

The story behind the answer

India became independent on 15 August 1947 while Mahatma Gandhi stayed in Calcutta.

The Indian Independence Act created the independent dominions of India and Pakistan in August 1947. Although national celebrations took place in Delhi, Gandhi spent the period in Calcutta, where he worked to calm communal violence between Hindus and Muslims.

Gandhi’s presence in Calcutta reflected his priorities during Partition. He visited affected neighborhoods, met community leaders, and used prayer and fasting in an effort to prevent renewed violence. His intervention helped produce a temporary peace in the city around independence.

The date is sometimes confused with 26 January 1950, when India’s Constitution came into force and the country became a republic. 26 November 1949 was the date the Constitution was adopted, while 30 January 1948 was the date of Gandhi’s assassination.
