Assassin's Creed Origins opens in 49 BCE, during the final decades of Ptolemaic Egypt.
The game begins with Bayek of Siwa returning to Egypt after being away from his home region. Its historical story unfolds during the reign of Ptolemy XIII, amid political conflict involving Cleopatra and Julius Caesar. The game uses this period to depict the origins of the Hidden Ones, the organization that later becomes the Assassin Brotherhood.
Origins does not portray ancient Egypt at the time of the pharaohs. It is set much later, when Greek and Roman influence is deeply established and Alexandria is a major Hellenistic city. That distinction is a common source of confusion.
The exact opening date is often summarized as 49 BCE, while later story events move into 47 BCE. The game was released in 2017 and served as a major redesign of the series' role-playing systems.
