The match took place on August 27, 2000, at the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. The teams of Edge and Christian, The Dudley Boyz, and The Hardy Boyz competed for the WWF Tag Team Championship, which was suspended above the ring.

The three teams had already become associated with tables, ladders, and high-risk tag-team wrestling through earlier matches at WrestleMania 2000 and the 2000 King of the Ring. SummerSlam formalized those elements into the first match officially called a TLC match.

The Dudley Boyz won the contest and captured the tag-team titles. Later TLC matches became recurring attractions in WWE, including dedicated pay-per-view events. The earlier WrestleMania match is often mistakenly called the first TLC match, but it was officially a Triangle Ladder match with tables involved.
