Which writer won the 1908 Nobel Prize in Literature for idealistic philosophy?

The story behind the answer

Rudolf Eucken won the 1908 Nobel Prize in Literature for his idealistic philosophy.

Eucken was a German philosopher whose work argued that spiritual life and moral action were central to human existence. The Nobel citation praised his earnest search for truth and his idealistic philosophy of life.

Unlike many Literature laureates, Eucken was known primarily for philosophical writing rather than novels or poetry. His books addressed ethics, religion, culture, and the place of the individual in modern society. He also taught at the University of Jena for many years.

The 1908 prize is sometimes confused with the 1907 award, which went to Rudyard Kipling, or the 1909 award, which went to Selma Lagerlöf. Eucken’s selection shows that the Literature prize has sometimes recognized influential nonfiction and philosophical authors.
