Which wrestler holds WWE's longest recognized world championship reign?
Answer
Bruno Sammartino
Answer
Bruno Sammartino
Bruno Sammartino holds WWE's longest recognized world championship reign, lasting 2,803 days from 1963 to 1971.
Sammartino defeated Buddy Rogers for the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship at Madison Square Garden on May 17, 1963. He became the promotion's defining champion during the territory era, when title defenses in major arenas helped establish professional wrestling's regional business model.
Sammartino lost the championship to Ivan Koloff in January 1971, ending a reign that lasted more than seven years. He regained the title in December 1973 and held it for another 1,237 days. These two reigns are counted separately, so the record refers to the length of one reign rather than combined days as champion.
A common mix-up is confusing this record with WWE's post-1988 title records. Hulk Hogan and Bob Backlund had lengthy later reigns, but neither approached Sammartino's first run.
