Which wrestler held the WWWF Championship for a record 2,803 days?

The story behind the answer

Bruno Sammartino held the WWWF Championship for a record 2,803 days.

Sammartino’s first reign began on May 17, 1963, when he defeated Buddy Rogers in New York City. He held the championship until January 18, 1971, when Ivan Koloff defeated him at Madison Square Garden. That reign lasted nearly eight years and remains one of the longest recognized world-title reigns in major professional wrestling history.

Sammartino later won the title again and became a central star of the World Wide Wrestling Federation during its regional expansion. His popularity was especially strong among Italian-American audiences in the northeastern United States.

Bob Backlund and Hulk Hogan also had historically long WWF Championship reigns, but neither matched Sammartino’s first reign. The promotion later shortened its name from WWWF to WWF, which is why historical sources may use different title names for the same championship lineage.
