Kurt Angle became the first Olympic gold medalist to win the WWE Championship.
Angle won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He entered professional wrestling with that legitimate amateur achievement as a central part of his presentation, often declaring that he had “won a gold medal with a broken freakin’ neck.”
He debuted in the WWF in 1999 and won the WWF Championship at No Mercy on October 22, 2000, defeating The Rock. That achievement made him the first Olympic gold medalist to capture the company’s top championship.
Brock Lesnar also had a major amateur wrestling background, but he was not an Olympic gold medalist. Mark Henry competed internationally in weightlifting, while Kerry Von Erich used the “Texas Tornado” identity in professional wrestling. Angle’s Olympic credential and rapid rise made his career unusual even among elite wrestling champions.
