Which WRC rally is held on the island of Corsica?

The WRC rally held on the island of Corsica is the Tour de Corse. The event is also known by its longer descriptive name, the Tour de Corse–Rallye des 10,000 Virages, referring to the island’s famously twisting mountain roads.

The rally was first held in 1956 and became France’s round of the World Rally Championship from the championship’s inaugural 1973 season. Although its name means “Tour of Corsica,” the modern event has not always circled the entire island; in later editions, stages were concentrated around areas such as Ajaccio.

Unlike Rally Sweden’s frozen roads, the Tour de Corse is an asphalt rally. Its narrow, winding roads, rapid changes in elevation and limited room for error make it one of the most technically demanding events in rallying. Weather can still complicate the challenge, especially in Corsica’s mountainous interior.

The rally has a notable and tragic connection with Group B history. Fatal accidents involving Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto in 1986 followed the death of Attilio Bettega at the 1985 event, contributing to concerns about the safety of Group B cars.
