Which car did Juha Kankkunen use to win the 1986 WRC drivers' title?

Juha Kankkunen used the Peugeot 205 T16 E2—also called the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Evolution 2—to win the 1986 World Rally Championship drivers’ title. It was Peugeot’s four-wheel-drive Group B contender and one of the fastest rally cars of its era.

Kankkunen joined Peugeot for 1986 as Ari Vatanen continued recovering from his serious accident. Driving the E2, Kankkunen won the Swedish Rally, the Acropolis Rally and Rally New Zealand, while also collecting several other strong finishes. Its mid-engine layout, four-wheel drive and turbocharged engine made it effective on both loose-surface and mixed rallies.

The title was not settled simply by the final classified results. Kankkunen’s principal rival, Lancia driver Markku Alén, appeared to take the championship after winning the Rallye Sanremo. FISA later annulled that rally’s results following the dispute over Peugeot’s bodywork, removing Alén’s points and confirming Kankkunen as champion.

The Ford RS200, Audi Sport Quattro S1 and Lancia Delta S4 were all contemporary Group B cars, but none was Kankkunen’s championship-winning mount in 1986.
