Which World War II operation is depicted in the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far?

The story behind the answer

A Bridge Too Far depicts Operation Market Garden, the Allied airborne and ground offensive in the Netherlands in September 1944.

The operation combined airborne landings with an advance by British, American, and Polish forces. The plan aimed to seize a series of bridges and cross the Rhine, potentially allowing the Allies to bypass Germany’s western defenses and end the war sooner.

Several bridges were captured, but the final bridge at Arnhem could not be held. The failure became associated with the phrase “a bridge too far,” popularized by Lieutenant General Frederick Browning in a remark reported after the operation. The film takes its title from Cornelius Ryan’s 1974 nonfiction book.

Richard Attenborough directed the 1977 film, which features an unusually large ensemble cast including Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, and James Caan. Operation Overlord was the broader Allied invasion of Normandy, not the operation portrayed by this film.
