Which wolf chases the sun across the sky in Norse myth?

The story behind the answer

Sköll is the wolf that chases the Sun across the sky in Norse mythology.

The Sun is personified as the goddess Sól, who drives a chariot across the heavens. According to Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda, Sköll pursues her relentlessly, forcing her to travel quickly. The chase gives the mythic explanation for the Sun’s movement across the sky.

Sköll is commonly paired with Hati Hróðvitnisson. Sköll hunts Sól, while Hati chases Máni, the personified Moon. In the traditional account, both wolves eventually catch and devour their celestial targets at Ragnarök, the cataclysmic end and renewal of the mythic world.

Sköll is often confused with Fenrir because the wolves are related: Fenrir is described as their father. Garmr is instead a monstrous hound associated with Hel and Ragnarök. Some scholars have also proposed that Sköll and Fenrir may preserve overlapping traditions, but the standard quiz answer for the wolf pursuing the Sun is Sköll.
