Which Wisconsin town was the birthplace of artist Georgia O'Keeffe?
Answer
Sun Prairie
Answer
Sun Prairie
Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
She was born there on November 15, 1887, to Francis Calyxtus O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe. Her father was a dairy farmer, and the family lived in the rural area near Madison during her childhood.
O'Keeffe began art lessons while still young and later studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. Those schools gave her traditional training before she developed the highly personal visual language that made her famous.
Sun Prairie is often overshadowed in accounts of O'Keeffe's life by New Mexico, where she spent much of her later career. Nevertheless, Wisconsin was the setting of her birth and early years, long before her desert paintings and Southwestern imagery became central to her reputation.
