Which New York museum hosted Georgia O'Keeffe's major 1946 retrospective?

The story behind the answer

The Museum of Modern Art hosted Georgia O'Keeffe’s major 1946 retrospective.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York presented Georgia O'Keeffe: Retrospective Exhibition in 1946. The exhibition was a significant institutional recognition of her career and was organized during the final year of Alfred Stieglitz’s life.

O'Keeffe had already exhibited widely through Stieglitz’s galleries and had developed a reputation for abstract compositions, enlarged flowers, New York buildings, and New Mexico subjects. A museum retrospective placed the range of those works into a broader historical account rather than presenting them as isolated gallery discoveries.

MoMA is one of the leading museums of modern art and had opened in 1929. O'Keeffe’s 1946 exhibition is not the same as her later 1970 retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Whitney show helped renew public attention to her work and introduced it to a younger generation.
