Abiquiu was home to Georgia O'Keeffe’s restored historic house and studio.
O'Keeffe bought the abandoned adobe house in Abiquiu in 1945 and spent years renovating it. The property had a distinctive black door set in a courtyard wall, a feature she later used as a subject in several paintings.
The house became an important base for O'Keeffe after she moved permanently to New Mexico. Its rooms, courtyard, surrounding mountains, and nearby roads connected her daily life with the visual motifs in her work. She also maintained a residence at Ghost Ranch, farther north.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum manages the property and offers limited tours. The house and studio were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998. Abiquiu is sometimes confused with Santa Fe because O'Keeffe spent her final years in Santa Fe and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located there, but the preserved home associated with her famous black door is in Abiquiu.
